According to new clinical data, the Cefaly migraine prevention device is a highly effective device that has very high compliance compared to oral migraine prevention medication.

Similar to TMJ Treatment

Cefaly is a one-of-its kind device for preventing migraines. The device, which has been described as a Star Wars tiara, although it more closely resembles something worn by Wonder Woman, is designed to reduce the likelihood of migraines by stimulating the trigeminal nerve using a mechanism very similar to a TENS device.

Cefaly’s Effectiveness

Now, though, we have data from US populations to show that the device is really effective. Of course, the study showing the quality of results is very small, involving just 24 patients over a period of 60 days. However, the study does show that of these patients, 81% saw a 50% reduction in the number of migraine attacks, and 75% saw a 50% reduction in the number of migraine days. Patients reported a statistically significant reduction in the intensity of their migraines and in the HIT-6 rating of their headaches.

A much larger data set also shows that people really seem to like using their Cefaly. Because patients have to re-order their electrodes for the Cefaly on a monthly basis, the company can tell how many people are using their devices regularly based on how many electrode orders they get.

Based on the orders they received, the company estimates that compliance for Cefaly use is about 72% –about twice that reported for oral migraine prevention medication. Of course, this is a rough estimate.
